Web site: www.colinmcgillivray.comWhere do you live? Beautiful Kaneohe, Hawai`i
What equipment do you use?As of current I'm happily married to my Canon 20d, a 10-22mm lens with a SPL waterhousing. The combo works great for me in the water. I have a 100-400L lens for land shots, and i do what i can to bum larger lenses when people aren't using them haha. Sometimes the 1.6x crop factor makes things difficult but I'm pretty happy with the results that I'm getting.
Favorite photo session?Anytime I shoot crystal clear water with blazing sunlight and a multitude of talent in the water. So far my favorite session to shoot would have to be at @*!# * the water was unbelievably clear, it was a perfect sandbar A-framing, only 2-3 feet but the crowd was minimal. Had myself and 2 friends out, barrels left and right, so many good times; i swam out, filled up a 2gig card then got my board and boogied the rest of the time.
Favorite locale to shot?Any talent is always fun to shoot as well as wherever waves are good. I think i prefer sandbars that just heave over. When there are good guys out that are ready to airdrop into a heaving cavern, you'll get a good shot even if you have a point-n-shoot digi cam. You seem to develop a trust with certain people though, especially if you work with them for a while. They as well as you learn how to position how close you can get to them without whacking them in the head with the housing. Riders that have been shot before also tend to know how to keep spray out of their faces...that seems to be the number one thing to take note of. Any clear water surf spot is always at the top of my list for favorite places to shoot.
Advice:It's a game out there so many things run through your head in a split second, figuring out where the waves are coming from, where the peaks are setting up at, are the riders in position, are you in position, how many people are going to take off, is there water drops or sand on the port, how far can i hold in the barrel without being sucked over...? It's all worth it though, the love of the sport and the ocean keep me coming back. It's always fun when you have friends in the lineup when a set is rumbling through, they know as well as you that you are about to take a beating, they yell and scream and you just claim the wave and brace for impact; come up laughing and gasping for air at the same time. I have a lot to learn though, I've only just begun to scratch the surface of water photography. I have so much more to learn, there are so many excellent photographers now it's hard to keep up with all the innovations and ideas; but this is what pushes the envelope and what makes for those amazing shots you see on a daily basis in magazines and on posters plastered across your walls.
